Pregnancy has a way of making even the most fashionable, well-dressed woman want to set her entire wardrobe on fire. Zippers stop zipping, buttons quit buttoning and pulling on pants with anything other than an elastic waistband? Forget about it. As a first-time mom, I concur: Pregnancy is one of the hardest eras to dress and shop for. Your body is changing every single week, and while you tear through your closet looking for something (anything!) that still fits and is socially acceptable to wear out in public, your mom brain is already stressing about how much a whole new bump-friendly wardrobe will cost. But here’s the thing, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to a maternity capsule wardrobe. All you need are a few key pieces that prioritize comfort, versatility and style, so you can still feel like you, no matter the trimester.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe
When it comes to any capsule wardrobe (whether it be seasonal or petite-specific) quality over quantity is key. Investing in a handful of well-made, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched for years to come is the sartorial secret to any well-curated closet—maternity included. “A good capsule wardrobe is one that you wear and love, no matter the season or occasion,” says Abby Hepworth, PureWow fashion editor. “If you’re hoping to build one, I always suggest starting by pulling out the clothing items you wear more than any other and then looking for what the connecting features are. For some, it may be a neutral color palette, and for others, it might be a love of breezy silhouettes. Then use that existing base to start building outward, adding in other items that sit seamlessly within the group.”

A few other must-haves not mentioned on this list? Weather-appropriate tops in basic colors like white, black and gray that you can mix and match with anything (think tank tops, T-shirts and long sleeve shirts). I waited for a bargain-basement sale at stores like Gap and Old Navy before swiping up a handful of each style in either my pre-pregnancy size or one to two sizes up (depending on the fit and fabric).
Another clothing item I was happy to have on hand were joggers: the sweatpant equivalent of a legging. “Joggers are also nice because they’re super comfy and have the added bonus of being able to be worn post-baby. I specifically loved this brushed bamboo pair from Cozy Earth,” Dellner explains. “Plus, they feel slightly more elevated than your standard sweatpant.”

Pregnancy comes with a lot of challenges, but getting dressed shouldn’t be one of them. Invest in a maternity capsule wardrobe that makes you feel comfortable, supported and stylish, but don’t feel like you need to replace everything in your closet. It’s possible that many of your pre-pregnancy clothes will continue to fit just fine (at least for the first few months), and this guide is here to help you fill in the gaps with tested picks from veteran moms who, seriously, have tried it all.
