bath and body works best fall candle: mahogany teakwood, apple picking and more

Confession: I have a candle problem. As soon as people walk into my basement, it’s one of the first things they notice. Despite the fact that there’s an inflatable bounce house down there, a Mount Everest-sized pile of laundry next to my washer and dryer and a piñata that looks exactly like me (a gag gift that feels too sadistic to break open). It’s a circus down there, for sure, but what people can’t stop staring at is…my wall of Bath & Body Works candles.

Why Do I Keep Buying These Candles?!

No matter which scents you buy, Bath & Body Works candles are incredibly consistent in terms of quality. The soy-based candles burn evenly—it’s rare to have a tunnel of unused wax along the edges—with an incredible throw that can fill a room. Plus, when there’s a $12.95 sale, how can you argue with that kind of deal?

This year, Bath & Body Works is selling a whopping 86 Halloween and fall candles (including two from its latest collaboration with Disney, which are villains-themed). With so many to choose from, often with such subtle variations in names (Are you more Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Porchside Pumpkin, Pumpkin Snickerdoodle or Maple Pumpkin? Warm Apple Pie or Apple Crisp?), where do you even begin? After sniffing and burning through dozens, here are the ones I’d recommend, based on their scent blend and strength (or throw), when lit and unlit.
