After this year’s Tony Awards, I had a lot of thoughts and they went beyond the Audra vs. Nicole Best Actress competition. They also went beyond the unforgivable Boop snub. I guess I just felt underwhelmed with the final big twist of the night: Maybe Happy Ending won the Tony for Best New Musical.

While I thought Maybe Happy Ending was cute—I even gave it a very positive review—the word “best” felt a bit of a stretch. But after a little grumbling, I let it go. I mean, who was really going to win it over MHE? Tony season was over and it was time to move on.

But then, I was finally able to catch a performance of another of last season’s new musicals, Operation Mincemeat, and I knew: I had found the true best musical of the season.
