Listen, I’ll take warm weather over the cold any day, but there is one trade-off to being able to wear breezy tops and short sleeves again: exposed body hair. And hey, if you prefer to keep things au natural, that’s great. If not, you have a few options that range from quick and easy (like shaving) to permanent and pricey (a la laser hair removal). I’m going to talk about the latter here and focus specifically on the home devices that have grown increasingly popular these days. These gadgets look like wands—and, in some cases, checkout scanners—and you glide them over areas where you want to remove hair. Over time, they’re supposed to gradually inhibit hair growth, leaving you with smoother skin. But how well do they really work? That’s what our editors set out to test.

So if you don’t have time nor money to spend on a professional, here are the best laser hair removal tools to consider instead, vetted by editors. Plus, I chatted with three dermatologists to learn more about how to use laser hair removal and the benefits over traditional methods.

How I Vetted Best Laser Hair Removal Tools

After researching the buzziest laser hair removal tools—combing through online reviews and recommendations everywhere from Amazon to Reddit to TikTok—I compiled a list of the top brands to vet. From there, I tapped a handful of editors to test the devices for 4 to 12 weeks on different areas of the body (i.e, legs, arms, armpits) and log the difference in their body hair, and the overall experience in general. To be deemed one of our picks, the tool needed to provide a great value for the cost, easy to use (and hold for a long period of time) and offered enough intensity/mode features that didn’t irritate the tester’s skin and, above all, was effective. Here’s what we discovered.

Note: For the reviews containing before and after photos, the photo on the left is before and the photo on the right is after weeks of testing.
