I, like many, was introduced to Bio-Oil Skincare Oil when searching for something to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. (Spoiler: It really works.) But while I may have discovered Bio-Oil for stretch marks, it’s quickly became a mainstay in my beauty cabinet because of all its additional benefits.

Let me elaborate. Firstly, Bio-Oil been the recipient of over 400 awards since its creation, including the Instyle Beauty Awards, Women’s Health Best Skincare Awards, Allure Best of Beauty and Good Housekeeping Beauty Awards. (Bravo!) Second, it can be used well beyond stretch-mark and scar treatment for things like uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, dry skin on your face or body, split ends and even as a cuticle treatment (it’s my new go-to). And finally, it’s the #1 dermatologist-recommended brand for stretch marks in the US, with over 125,000 5-star reviews on Amazon.

In fact, a top Amazon reviewer states: “I have been using this product for the past year and I am pleased with the results that I have gotten so far. It smells refreshing. My skin is softer and smoother. It helps with uneven skin tone and fades stretch marks. I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to improve the overall appearance of their skin. You can use it on your face and your body. It works wonders. I absolutely love my Bio-Oil!”

I don’t know about you, but this makes me feel pretty validated in my choice of body oil. Curious to know more about this skincare multihyphenate? Let’s dive in.

What Is Bio-Oil?

Bio-Oil launched over 35 years ago with a single product (Bio-Oil Skincare Oil) created by German chemist Dieter Beier, who studied and researched the positive effects of pure oil on skin. Made for all skin types, Bio-Oil Skincare Oil helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars and other marks due to surgery, injury, acne, aging, pregnancy and more. Consumers immediately fell in love with the brand, eventually making it a cult classic. Fast-forward to 2024 and it’s the world’s leading scar and stretch-mark treatment. Bio-Oil works hard to preserve and maintain the purity of oil and continues to be pioneers in the use of oil to treat skin concerns.

What Are the Ingredients?

Bio-Oil Skincare Oil acts as an emollient and makes skin feel soft and smooth. It’s made of various vitamins and essential plant oils, including lavender oil, sunflower oil, rosemary leaf oil and PurCellin Oil. PureCellin is lighter than other oils, non-greasy and has been shown to help repair and re-regulate the skin’s moisture barrier. The oils all work in conjunction to effectively moisturize the skin and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. It also has tocopheryl acetate, a form of vitamin E, which is a great antioxidant and known to protect the skin from aging and damage by free radicals.

What Does It Do?

As previously mentioned, Bio-Oil Skincare Oil promises huge benefits for your skin, such as preventing and fading the appearance of stretch marks and scars, but also soothing dry skin and hair, improving the appearance of uneven skin tone and even treating cuticles. While it’s most often used for the body, there are also benefits to applying it to your face: It’s a great daily face moisturizer and can improve the appearance of dark spots and acne scars. Pro tip: Start by using it as a spot treatment vs. a full-face moisturizer if you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin.

What Are the Results?

Bio-Oil Skincare Oil is award-winning for a reason. Not only is it, in my opinion, the best on the market for anyone who wants to improve the appearance of stretch marks or scars, it’s an effective moisturizer, cuticle treatment and hair hydrator. I love using it: It smells great, isn’t too heavy or sticky and it’s fast-absorbing. The non-comedogenic formula won’t clog pores so it’s safe for use on both the face and body—even for those with sensitive, oily, or acne prone skin. While it does take diligent use to see any major change when it comes to scar treatment, the additional benefits (face, nails, hair) can be seen almost immediately. It’s a skincare staple in my beauty routine, and I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a multitasking oil.
